Robotic Moon Lander SLIM Makes Upside Down Landing on Lunar Surface
Japan’s moon landing picture might be the space photo of the decade 🔗
Japan's robotic moon lander, SLIM, made a pinpoint landing on the lunar surface but ended up upside down, causing its solar panels to be unable to generate power. The spacecraft lost battery life and shut down shortly after landing, but communication was re-established, and science observations have begun. The spacecraft's small rovers, which separated just before touchdown, were able to capture an image of the lander. Despite the challenges, the mission team remains hopeful for a recovery before the lunar night brings freezing temperatures. The spacecraft was not built to withstand those conditions.
