The Rock Parrot: A Unique Australian Bird
The rock parrot is a small grass parrot native to Australia, with predominantly olive-brown upperparts and yellowish underparts. It nests in burrows or rocky crevices, mostly on offshore islands, and feeds on grass seeds and succulent plants. The species has suffered due to feral mammals, and its population is declining, but it is considered a least-concern species by the IUCN. The rock parrot is monogamous and breeds from August to December, laying three to six white eggs. Its conservation status is listed as least concern, but its population is decreasing due to threats such as feral animals and climate change. In aviculture, it is infrequently kept in captivity, with few records of successful breeding.
