Florida Governor Signs Bill to Address Organized Retail Theft

Governor Ron DeSantis has signed a bill (HB 549) to address "smash and grab" thefts and "porch piracy." The new law will make it a third-degree felony to engage in organized theft with five or more people and a second-degree felony to solicit others through social media for retail theft. DeSantis criticized liberal laws in other states, such as California, and emphasized the need for tougher penalties. Additionally, the legislation will increase criminal penalties for porch piracy. These measures will take effect on July 1.
