William Winter was a British chess player who won the British Open Chess Championship in 1934 and the British Chess Championship in 1935 and 1936. He was known for his strategic play and defeating top players, but struggled with health and tactical play consistency. Winter was also an author of chess books, a Communist, and the only British Champion to have served time in prison for his political activities. He played in four Olympiads and was the champion of Cambridge University during his law studies. In addition, he was the nephew of J. M. Barrie, the creator of Peter Pan.
