A marching band out of a church on Detroit's east side has helped hundreds of young people earn scholarships.

The Forever Illustrating Real Entertainment (F.I.R.E.) marching band in Detroit has been changing the lives of its members for nearly a generation. Founded by Joey Donaldson, the band has helped over 300 members secure scholarships and degrees in various fields. Despite funding the program from his own pocket, Donaldson's vision of creating a recreational program for kids facing hard times has been achieved, with alumni becoming music teachers and directors. F.I.R.E. provides a supportive ecosystem of teachers and mentors nurturing the next generation through music, and Donaldson's ultimate goal is to establish a permanent location for the band. The program has also helped members pursue college education and career opportunities.
