Community Effort to Bring Zed Text Editor to Linux

Zed Decoded: Linux when? - Zed Blog ๐Ÿ”—

In this episode of Zed Decoded, Thorsten talks to Mikayla, who's been leading the effort to Zed working on Linux, about the Zed's Linux version and how it's taking shape

Zed, a text editor, is making progress towards running on Linux, with the open-source community contributing to its development. The challenges of making Zed compatible with Linux involve implementing the Platform trait for Linux, addressing differences across Linux distributions, and finding a way to render Zed on Linux without Metal. The community effort has led to significant progress, but there are still remaining tasks before an alpha release, including resolving todos, implementing system dialogues for GPUI, and adding support for audio calls and drag & drop. Despite the remaining work, the rapid progress and high-quality contributions demonstrate the impressive teamwork involved in bringing Zed to a working state on Linux.
